• International Lutheran Council (ILC)
  "The ILC is a worldwide association of established confessional Lutheran church bodies which proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ on the basis of an unconditional commitment to the Holy Scriptures as the inspired and infallible Word of God and to the Lutheran Confessions contained in the Book of Concord as the true and faithful exposition of the Word of God. ... The origins of the International Lutheran Council (ILC) can be traced to a meeting of leaders of confessional Lutheran churches in Uelzen, Germany in July 1952. A second meeting was held in 1959 in Oakland, California to discuss the topic "The Fellowship Between our Churches." This was followed in 1963 by a third meeting in Cambridge, England, where the name "International Lutheran Theological Conference" was chosen for these informal international gatherings. During the next three decades eleven more informal gatherings of the heads of confessional Lutheran churches took place. The ILC as a council of church bodies officially came into existence in 1993 in Antigua, Guatemala with the adoption of a constitution by representatives from Lutheran church bodies from all six continents." • Lutheran World Federation
  The Lutheran World Federation is a global communion of Lutheran churches, with central offices at the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva, Switzerland. Founded at Lund, Sweden in 1947, the LWF now has 136 member churches in 76 countries representing 61.7 million of the world's 65.4 million Lutherans.

    The LWF has an office to support the work of the Federation in the member churches in North America. The office is located in the ELCA offices in Chicago.

Called to Full Communion


In 2001, the National Convention of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada and the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada, meeting simultaneously in Waterloo, Ontario approved the Waterloo Declaration, establishing a relationship of full communion between the two churches.

  The ELCIC was established in 1986 as a result of a merger of two bi-national churches, resulting in the ELCIC and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The ELCIC is comprised of 5 synods. The ELCIC is a member of the Lutheran World Federation, the Canadian Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches.

  SELK = Independent Evangelical - Lutheran Church
  "Die Selbständige Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche (SELK) ist eine lutherische Bekenntniskirche. Sie ist vom Staat unabhängig und finanziert sich durch freiwillige Beiträge ihrer Mitglieder. Mittelpunkt ihrer Theologie und Verkündigung ist das Evangelium von Jesus Christus, wie es in der Bibel steht.
  The SELK is an independent church body. It does not recieve subsidies from the state but rather it finances itself by the offerings of its members. The SELK does have its own seminary for the education of pastors. This seminary is located in Oberursel, north of Frankfurt. The SELK also has its own mission society and a couple of institutions to care for the needy, such as hospitals or nursing homes. The SELK is not a member of the Lutheran World Federation, because we believe that altar and pulpit fellowship equals church fellowship. Together with other confessional Lutheran church bodies, the SELK forms the International Lutheran Council, ILC.
